Child ticket

I am traveling with my little boy who is 4 years old (1 meter tall). Do i need to purchase a ticket for him? As i understand, kids below 1.2M can travel for free in domestic trains. I am quite petite and have traveled on sleeper rides a couple of times and had always been comfortable sleeping on the same berth with him.
