About:How to Apply for a China Visa

Husband and I are u.s. citizens, currently living in Japan

We would like to take a short trip to Shanghai, would we need to apply for a tourist L type ahead of our trip. If so would we apply under u.s. or Japan? Or if we keep it under 144hrs would we be visa-free?

Yes, you need to apply for it ahead of your trip. You can apply for it in Japan.
Or if you travel like Japan-Shanghai (144 hours)-a third country or region rather than Japan, you can enjoy the 144 hour free transit there, and then no visa will be needed.
