visit friends in shanghai for 55 hours

My husband and I are traveling from the USA to Siem Reap. Our return flight has a layover in Shanghai and we would like to visit (for two days) friends who live there. We prefer to get the 72 hour free transit. Should we be concerned that we can't get this approval before hand but have to wait and get it in customs in Shanghai?

Linda, you cannot get the free transit in advance. When you board the flight in Siem Reap, you should inform the carrier that you want to enjoy the free transit in Shanghai. After arrival, you can go to the transit counter to apply for free transit.
