About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Hello I'm a US citizen who is currently visiting relatives in Taiwan.

I would like to visit Beijing and see friends. If I come from Taiwan and return to Taiwan do I still qualify for the 72 hour Visa because I'm a US citizen?

No, you can't come from Taiwan and return to Taiwan. You should go to a third country after the transit in Beijing.

If I fly first to Hong Kong from Taipei, then fly to Beijing, and finally fly back to Taipei would that permit me to apply for the 72 hour free transit?

So your travel route will be like Taipei-HK-Beijing (72 hours)-Taipei? If yes, you will qualify for the 72 hour visa-free transit in Beijing.
