Buying subway/metro tickets in China

does the subway/metro ticket machine has an English language option?
and can foreigners but subway/metro tickets at the ticket machine?
or do you actually need a Chinese citizen ID to do so?

There is English option for guangzhou. You do not need ID card or something, but need to prepare some cash, especially small amount like CNY5, CNY10, CNY20.
