I will be disembarking from a cruise ship in Shanghai and have read recently that a Chinese visa is not required if your stay there is less than 72 hours, is that correct?

If your travel route is like country A-Shanghai (144 hours)-country B, you can enjoy the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai, and then no visa will be needed.
