About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I am flying from Perth to Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Lumpur to Shanghai and then Shanghai to Los Angeles

Am I able to exit the airport during my layover in Shanghai and then return to the airport to depart to Los Angeles?
