About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

my daughter is returning home from Thailand and has a 5.5hr layover in Beijing she is a US citizen

what will she have to do? do we need a visa ? will she need to pick up her luggage?

She won't need a visa, but she may need to clear customs if the luggage is not tagged to the final destination. Otherwise she doesn't have to (but can) leave the airport.
