Purush, if all your transit time in China is less than 24 hours, you will qualify for the 24 hour direct transit. No transit visa will be required then.

Thank you, but I got a message from Chinese consulate in San Francisco and from my travel agent that because I am changing flights in two cities - the connecting between them could be domestic so exiting international transit areas - I need a transit visa. Just so that this is recorded now.

I know this sounds hard to believe, but the consulate is quite ignorant in this matter. NONE of the Chinese airports have international transit areas other than Beijing Capital Intl Airport, so people transiting through an airport other than Beijing will be given a 24-hour temporary entry permit which allows them to travel to other transit points.
