Bill, if the last country or region the ship came from before entering Shanghai is not HK, you can enjoy the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai.

Thanks Larry,
The itinerary of the ship is Singapore,Thailand.Vietnam.Xiamen( China). Hong Kong, Taipae,Yokohama, Osaka,Seoul ,Shanghai. Then fly to Hong Kong to Australia.

From your answer ,which is so much appreciated, I have a concern that the ship visits Xiamen before it gets to Shanghai.I know I can get a day visa on board if I want to get off at Xiamen.
Does the visit to Xiamen by the ship affect my eligibility for the 144 hours in Shanghai

I don't think so since you are technically arriving at Shanghai from a third country, and Xiamen issues its own special visa for foreigners which authorizes a stay of three days.
