About:China Visa Exemption

If I fly to Beijing from US and fly back from Beijing to USwith a 22 hour lay over, can I get a 24

If the inbound is from same airport, in this case Beijing, with a 22 layover before I outbound brome Beijing back to US will I qualify for the 24 hour visa?

I would like to go to the city and stay overnight in a hotel, look around before heading back to the airport.

That is not "transit" since it doesn't involve flights to a third country, so you must get a visa or you will be refused entry.
