Question

HiWe are travelling from Canada to Shanghai then to Thailand (3 days later) then back to Shanghai and transiting the same day back to Canada.  I am assuming we are OK with the 144 hour visa on arrival and then the no visa transit because we are leaving within 24 hours back to Canada on our way home.  Both passengers have Canadian passports.

Yes. You are qualified for the 144-hour visa free transit and do not need to apply for a Chinese visa. Just to be on the safe side, you are suggested to double confirm with your local Chinese embassy or the airline company.
