About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

One way tickets.

I will have a one-way ticket from Taiwan into Shanghai, then 3 days later, a one way ticket from Shanghai into Tokyo. Would this qualify?

These tickets are issued by different airlines.

Scott, yes, it will qualify for the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai.
