About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Hi I am interested in booking flights to Beijing.

I understand you don't need a visa to visit Beijing if your visit is 72 hours can you tell me if the time you are checked in for your return flight counts as the flights I am looking at from landing in china to departing are 73 hours but if the time stops once I check in the 2 hour checkin would mean I would be 71 hours so within the 72 hour rule for not needing an entry permit. flights are arriving 15.50 on 23/3 departing 16.50 on 26/3 thank you for your assistance.

Denise, the 72 hours start from 00:00 the day following your entry date, namely it will start from 00:00 on 24/3, so your transit time in Beijing is within 72 hours.

This advice is wrong. Timatic (which will be used by your airline) currently states the following:

Visa required, except for Holders of British passports endorsed British Citizen holding confirmed onward airline tickets to a third country, if arriving in and departing from the same city:
- at Changsha (CSX), Chengdu (CTU), Chongqing (CKG), Dalian (DLC), Guangzhou (CAN), Qingdao (TAO), Tianjin (TSN), Wuhan (WUH), Xi'an (XIY) or Xiamen (XMN) for a max. transit time of 72 hours, starting from 00:01 on the day following the day of entry.
- at Beijing (PEK), Guilin (KWL), Harbin (HRB), Kunming (KMG), or Shenyang (SHE) for a max. transit time of 72 hours;

The calculation of time at Beijing is measured from your scheduled arrival to scheduled departure time. You are running a risk of being denied boarding if this time is 73 hours and you should either change your itinerary or get a visa.
