Mathieu, if you can make a travel like Japan-HK-Shanghai (5days)-Japan, or Japan-Shanghai (5 days)-HK-Japan, you will be eligible for the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai, and then no visa will be needed. You just need to bring your passport and confirmed air tickets.

Of course, you can. If you travel like Japan-Shanghai-Japan, you need to apply for a tourist L type entry permit in advance.

You need to provide your passport and its copy, a completed application form, a passport-style photo, your residence permit in Japan, and an invitation letter from your friend, as well as financial support. In addition, you may also be required to provide travel insurance.
