About:China Visa Application Procedure and Fee

Hi we are flying SYD to PVG staying in Shanghai for 4 days

and then departing on a cruise ship going to Japan, Taiwan, Manila, Vietnam and Hong Kong, then flying back to SYD. Do we need a visa or do we qualify for the 144 hour free stay. Flying Qantas and they won't give any indication as to weather they will let us board the flight without an entry permit.
