Merv, if you arrive in Shanghai from Australia, and then catch a cruise in Shanghai for a third country or region, you will be eligible for the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai.
When the cruise ship returns to Shanghai on 29 Dec and then you will fly to Japan, if Japan is not the country the cruise sails from, you will be able to use the free transit in Shanghai again.
