About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Entry from Hong Kong Airport and take the MTR to Guangzhou

Hi, We are US citizens and we are looking to stay in Guangzhou for 2 days but our flights is to Hong Kong. Are we still eligible 72hrs visa free transit? can we get the permit at the MTR entrance on our way to Guangzhou or we will have to get it at the Hong Kong air port?

Alex, if you want to use the 72h free transit in Shanghai, you need to fly from HK to Guangzhou and then fly to another country. If you will take the MTR to Guangzhou, you should obtain an entry permit in advance.

Sorry, I think you misunderstood me. We are planning to go Guangzhou only. Our flight is from Taiwan to Hong Kong and we plan to take the MTR from Hong Kong to Guangzhou. Our return flight will also be from Hong Kong to Taiwan.

Sorry for my typo. the first sentence in my previous reply should be "if you want to use the 72h free transit in Guangzhou...". So I'm afraid you still don't qualify for the 72h free transit because you take the MTR to Guangzhou and your travel route is not eligible.
