About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

SYD - PVG - HKG -SYD

I hold Australia passport, fly from SYD with Cathay airline , flight transit HKG first since it is Cathay airline home base, then connecting flight to Shanghai PVG - HKG ( stop over ) - SYD
Am I qualify for 144 hours transit visa free ?

Sorry, you do not qualify for the 144h free transit because you depart from HK to Shanghai and then go back to HK.

But HKG counts as a 3rd country for 144-hour transit visit purposes?
Would both of these be OK:
1) LAX (US) -> PVG -> HKG -> LAX
2) NRT (JP) -> HKG -> PVG -> NRT

Yes, HK counts as a 3rd country. These two routes are fine with the free transit policy.
