About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Over the 72hr transit VISA threshold, does it still apply?

I have a flight booked from London Heathrow that lands in Beijing 09.55hrs on 29/12/16 with an onward flight to Aukland at 19.30hrs on 01/01/17. This means I have a scheduled stopover of 81.5hrs.

However, I have read about the 72hr transit free transit commencing at 00.01 hrs the day after you arrive, but am nervous about turning up at the airport without anything substantial to back this up. Please could you advise on the process required?

Dear, there is no need to worry! The 72 hours do start from 00:00 the day following your entry date, so it will start from 00:00 on 30/12/2016. You are able to enjoy the 72 hour free transit in Beijing if you travel like that.
You need to inform the carrier that you want to use the 72 hour free transit in Beijing when you board the plane in London. After you arrive at Beijing airport, you should go to the transit counter to apply for the free transit.

This itinerary is no longer compliant for Transit without Visa. Since the end of October, according to Timatic, the calculation of time at Beijing is now measured from your scheduled arrival to scheduled departure time (this was previously measured from 00:01 the following day). You should look at changing your flight or obtaining a visa, or else you risk being denied boarding at LHR.
