About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

72-hour Free Transit or Direct Transit

Hi, I will be travelling to Beijing on a flight from Amsterdam and stay there for a week. For this I have a single entry visa. I also want to take a side trip to Bangkok towards the end of my trip and fly back to Beijing to catch my return flight back to Amsterdam. There will only be about 5 hours in between these flights so I'm not leaving the airport but I might have to pass customs because I have to claim my luggage from the BKK-Beijing flight. At least I think so because I'm using two different airlines.

So although the 72 free transit would apply to me, I think the Direct transit would also apply.
Am I correct and what would be the best option for me ?
What is the procedure for Direct transit ?
Do I even pass customs when transferring like I explained ?
intercontinental flight is China Southern and regional flight Thailand-China is with Hainan airlines. Both tickets booked separately. i don't think I have the option to label through my luggage.

Thanks in advance.

Dino, because you just transit for 5 hours, you may be given a 24 hour direct transit there.
If you don’t leave the airport, you can just stay at the transit zone waiting for your next flight.
However, if you need to collect your luggage, you need to apply for a temporary stay permit after arriving at Beijing airport and then you can claim your luggage and check-in again.
