US Passport with single entry visa to China

Hi I am travelling from US to Guangzhou with family with the roundtrip tickets from USA to Guangzhou. Can I in China, leave for Macau to HK to Bangkok comeback to GuangZhou, apply for 72 hr free transit and leave from Guangzhou to USA with family the next day?
