About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Quick turnaround from US

We are traveling from San Francisco (USA) to Shanghai and then returning the following day to San Francisco (USA). It's about a 36 hour overnight layover. Do we qualify for the 72hour visa free transit?
After reading multiple websites (including government ones) we are still confused.

No you don't.

When you enter China from the USA your first stop after you left China can't be the USA.
It must be a different country.
