Malaysia passport transit in shanghai

hi there
My friend will be travelling from san francisco to hongkong via SH. We will be leaving on the next day. In this case does he(malaysia passport) needs a visa as the entire stay will be less than 24 hours.

Oh, since the layover is within 24h, he doesn't need a visa. If wishing to get out of airport for a visit, it is easy to apply for a stay permit at the inspection counter. Showing the permit, he will be allowed to have a short visit in the city.
