we also do a lot of site seeing and have visited many cities over the years. We use China as our stopover when travelling to Europe. I went to renew our Visitor L type for one year multiple entry and was informed that this is no longer available to visitors and they would only issue us a two entry visa. I have checked all the websites but there is no information about the changes

Terry, I have never heard of that. Did the consular officers tell you that? If yes, it may be true. If not, you are advised to contact with the embassy of PRC and inquire about it.
