About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

17 hour stop in Beijing?

I will fly into Beijing (from Chicago to Shanghai to Beijing, then to Sydney afterward) and I have 17 hours in Beijing before my next flight. I would like to obtain a free permit to visit the city, but I will not check into a hotel. Do I need to find a police station in Beijing to register? Also can I visit the Great Wall under the 72-hour policy or does that require a tourist visa?

Emily, you are not eligible for the 72 hour free transit because you will stop in Shanghai and Beijing.
If your total layover time in Beijing and Shanghai is less than 24 hours, you will be able to use the 24 hour direct transit. You can apply for a temporary stay permit at the immigration office and then you can go to the city for a visit.

Yes, I will fly Chicago to Shanghai, immigration + quarantine and next flight in 2 hour stop, fly to Beijing, 17 hour stop in Beijing, fly to Sydney. That isn't eligible for the pass?

If so, you can enjoy the 24 hour direct transit because your total layover in Shanghai and Beijing is less than 24 hours. Nice trip!

Thank you for the reply! I still wonder about my original questions: Since I will not book a hotel, do I need to find a police station in Beijing to register? Also can I visit the Great Wall (outside the city of Beijing proper) under the 72-hour policy or does that require a tourist visa?

Because you will stay for less than 24 hours, you don’t need to register at the police station.
As I said above, you cannot enjoy the 72 hour free transit, but use the 24 hour direct transit. You need to apply for a free temporary stay permit at Shanghai airport and then after you go to Beijing, you can use the stay permit to leave the airport to the Great Wall for a visit. No tourist L type is needed.
