About:Chinese Temporary Residence Permit

If I get a X1 visa, then get the temporary residence permit based on the X1 type

am I allowed to work full time?

Jeff, you are not allowed to work on a student X1 type.

What if I enter with a M type for an internship, can it be transfered to a Z type from within the country? Or what is the procedure after the internship?

It is possible to convert a business M type to work Z type.
You should first prepare the required documents for Z type: your passport, the application form, a half-length color photo, alien employment permit and an invitation letter from a duly authorized unit, as well as valid registration form of temporary residence.
Afterwards, go to the exit and entry administration of the local PSB to change the M type to Z type.
