What's your opinions on whether to stay in the Kowloon area or on the island (Causeway Bay)?

This is our first time visiting, and i would like to know which location would be best, also in terms of in the evenings if we are looking around and want to get back safely to our hotel, how easy it will be to catch the metro etc.
