Invitation letter necessary for pre and post tour time?

We are going on a tour with a set itinerary, but are arriving in Shanghai a week prior to the tour and staying in Beijing 3 days after the tour. In Shanghai we will be staying with friends. In Beijing we will continue in our hotel, but will be with friends. Do we need to get invitation letters for the the pre and post time?
