I do not wish to be offensive, but I would like to send a gift to an elderly Chinese couple.

When and what would be appropriate, as I am not well known to them?

Presents of distinctive local features of your country should be appropriate. Maybe you can prepare some snacks and handicrafts. Oh, health products should be a good choice as well.
