About:Marriage Registration in China

Is a work permit required

I am due to be married in September, I have been told that I will need a work permit to get married. I do not intend to work in China.
I will be applying to bring my new wife back to the UK in the future

Andrew, usually, the work permit is not needed if you just marry in PRC.
But if both of you are foreigners, one of you need to provide the residence permit in PRC. In this case, the work permit is needed.
