we some friends are planning to camp near the wall. does anyone have done this before and give us suggestions?

As I know, Mutianyu connects Jiankou on the west. Jiankou is praised to be a good camping site and a section to view the wild beauty of the Wall. You can hike along MTY all the way to the west to camp on Jiankou.
