Terry, if you live in PRC for 5 years in a row and your annual stay in PRC is no less than 9 months, it’s possible for you to apply for the permanent residence permit for spouse reunion which may be valid for 5 years.

If your wife is Chinese citizen and stable marriage for five years, then you can apply for five year permanent Chinese ID card. Under this card you are treated same as Chinese citizen. You are covered for Social Security (some provinces) you are allowed to work, do business. If you are married in China then just a marriage certificate, application form, 2 photographs, your original passport. If you are married outside china then Marriage Certificate, translation in chinese and either attested by Chinese Embassy in U.K / U.K. embassy in China.
