To Tongling Grand Canyon, you can take a bus to Xialei Town, and change to a bus to Hurun Town. Then transfer to a bus to it.

Yes, joining a tour will save a lot of trouble. The tours I mentioned above last two days. It starts from NN, and return to NN after visiting the waterfall and Tongling Grand Canyon. Maybe, you can book it through your hotel. Don't worry! :)
