Agnes, you can apply for a tourist L type for the trip to Shanghai. It costs 151 pounds per person.
If you want to apply for a group tourist L type, you need to book a tour from a travel agency. The cost will vary for different travel agencies.
Actually, if you travel like: UK-Shanghai-Hong Kong-UK, or UK- Hong Kong -Shanghai-UK, you can enjoy the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai. In this case, no entry permit is needed. It will saves a lot.

Hi I have another question. I have actually booked a tour from an agency, what could be the next thing to do to apply for a group tourist visa? Can i apply it to the Chinese Embassy such as tourist visa L? Does it cost cheaper? Please advise.
I am looking forward to your response.

You can just give your passports to the travel agency and ask the agency to do the application for you. In this case, you can get a group type entry permit, which is a sheet with all group member's names and passport numbers. Generally speaking, it costs cheaper than normal entry permit.
