About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Entering and Leaving by Sea on same Carrier - Do I qualify for the 144 visa free transit

Hi, I carry a Canadian passport. I'll be travelling by cruise ship from South Korea to Shanghai. The ship will be docking at the Shanghai port for 11 hours before heading to Hong Kong. I'm planning to spend only a couple of hours in Shanghai before heading back to the ship. As a passenger of the cruise ship, am I eligible for the 144 hour free transit.

Cath, you qualify for the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai, but because you just stop there for 11 hours, you may be required to apply for a free temporary stay permit at the port and then you can leave the cruise to visit the city.

Hello Jason,
Thanks very much for responding. Much appreciated. Do you mind explaining what is a free temporary stay permit? Is it a Arrival/Departure Card?

A free temporary stay permit is not the Arrival/Departure Card. The temporary stay permit is a stamp on your passport and it is used for those who enjoy the 24 hour direct transit to leave the port and go to the city to travel around.
