passport number

my usa passport is in the process of being renewed....so my passport number will be changing. Can I purchase a train ticket now using my
present passport number, and then use my renewed passport when i travel?

No, you need to use the passport you booked the ticket for boarding, if they are not the same, you cannot get the paper ticket from station. You'd better booking it after you get the new passport.
