Can I take my laptop and Hard drive when it is for study?

I have an X2 visa and will need the laptop and hard drive for my studies. The hard drive has some tv programmes on it that can be deleted if need be. But will they be confiscated regardless?

Generally, self-use laptop can pass the customs. If the hard drive doesn't contain some politically sensitive contents, it won't be confiscated.
