About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Ho Chih Minh to Shanghai to Vancouver

I'm travelling from Ho Chih Minh to Vancouver with a layover in Shanghai for 17 hours. Do I qualify for the 144 hours visa free stay?

Justin, you qualify for the 144 hour free transit, but because you just stop there for 17 hours, you will be given a 24 hour direct transit.

It is another kind of visa-free transit. 24 hour direct transit is applicable to passengers from all countries. As long as your entry to PRC is a less than 24-hour transit, you can transit freely without visa.
