David, you can apply for a tourist L type to visit there. The required documents include your passport and its photocopy, the ap0plciation form, a passport-style photo, hotel booking record, and round trip air tickets as well as your residence permit in UK. And then submit the application to the CVASC to apply for the L type.
Shenzhen is good area to visit for a week.
Currently, the high temperature there is about 35 C (95 F), but you may feel extremely hot because of the high humidity. Skirts, dresses, and shorts are proper for this time.
If you can speak English, I think it’s fine if you go there. Although Chinese is the official language in daily life, English is often spoken because of the development of tourism.
You shouldn’t miss the Da Meisha and Xiao Meisha Scenic Area, Splendid China - Folk Culture Villages, Window of the World and Shenzhen Happy Valley. Other famous attractions are also worth a visit.
