About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I am traveling to Rome via Shanghai, From Melbourne.

I wanted to know how do I apply for a free transit? I am staying in a hotel over night and need a visa.
What is the steps to doing this?
Do I need to apply prior to leaving?

Jess, if your layover time in Shanghai for less than 144 hours, you can use the free transit in Shanghai. You should inform the carrier that you want to use the free transit in Shanghai when you board the plane. After arriving at the airport, you can follow the direction signs to the free transit counter to apply for it.
After you get the free stay permit, you can leave the airport and check in at a hotel.
