Dear, I think you can only apply for a temporary residence permit now.
The required documents for Q1 type include your passport, the completed application form attached with a passport-style photo, valid registration form of temporary residence, an invitation letter from your wife and copy of her Chinese ID card, and your marriage certificate as well as health examination report.
And then submit the application to the exit and entry administration of the local PSB to apply for it within 30 days after you enter PRC with the Q1 type.

Thank you so much. Would you happen to know about getting my american marriage certificate notarized? Is that something i must do in order for them to accept my application fpr the permit?

Kody, you should first get it notarized by the local notary notary public, and then have it authenticated by the county clerk (some states require this), and sectary of state. After, get the marriage certificate attested by the consulate general of PRC.
You can just provide all the required documents and then you can probably get it.
