Do i need visa to transit between terminals in Shanghai Pudong Airport?

My relative is a US citizen and currently in this city with 1 entry permit until July 14. He will leave there on July 2 to Malaysia and will fly back to SH on July 12 to catch the flight to United States.
Does he need to apply for entry permit again or no?
Thank you for your assistance. I appreciate it.

Liv, when he flies back to Shanghai, if he just stays there for less than 144 hours, no entry permit is needed because he are eligible for the 144 hour free transit. If not, he needs to re-apply for a transit G type or tourist L type in advance.
