Bill, to avail yourself of the free transit policy, you can possibly travel standby but you should have a confirmed ticket to a third country or desitnation. So that you can show it to the immigraiton officer when your board the plane and after your arrival. The free-stay period in Shanghai can be as long as 144 hours.
