Can I travel through Shanghai if I am traveling as a stand by passenger? If the answer is yes, how much time is allowed in Shanghai?

Bill, to avail yourself of the free transit policy, you can possibly travel standby but you should have a confirmed ticket to a third country or desitnation. So that you can show it to the immigraiton officer when your board the plane and after your arrival. The free-stay period in Shanghai can be as long as 144 hours.
