Can I cancel my residence permit and z visa?

Hi there,
I was wondering whether I could cancel a Z type and residence permit.
I am no longer working for the employer that helped me get the Z type and they are unwilling to give me a release letter for a new employer. So I am wondering whether I can cancel the current Z type and residency permit before it has expired and start a new application for my future employer.
