About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Am I able to go on a day trip to China if I am visiting Hong Kong?

I hold a US passport, Can I just take a day trip to Shenzen w/o a visa?

For an US citizen it is not possible as you can't apply for the 5 days Shenzhen VOA.
It is not available for americans.

It will be needed. there is VOA policy for Mainland PRC but not for US passport, and Mainland PRC have separate border control other than Hong Kong.
