Hey I'm thinking of visiting a few friends studying in China , what kind of visa do I need to apply for and is it possible being a student myself?

Caroline, you can apply for a tourist L type to visit your friends in PRC. If you can find a school to enroll you, then you can apply for a student X type to enter PRC and study there.
