Getting a tourist Visa to PRC

Sirs:

As an American tourist I would like to visit China and Shanghai this fall and would appreciate your responses to the following questions:

1.  As I am not exactly sure of the month can I schedule my flights or make hotel reservations without having a Visa?  I am thinking of staying 10 days in PRC and 5 days in Shanghai.
2.  How long will it take to get an entry permit?
3. Do I need a separate permit for entrance into China and Shanghai?
4.  Are documents showing the itinerary including round trip air ticket booking record and proof of hotel reservation, all required. For instance, I have my booked (not paid) my hotel in Beijing but have yet to get my tickets.

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my questions.

1. Sybil, you need to make hotel reservation and flights in advance. Of course, if you have friends in PRC, you can ask your friend to issue an invitation letter to you. In this case, you may not need to reserve the hotel purchase the flights ahead of your trip.
2. After you prepare all the required documents and submit the application to the embassy, it usually takes 4 working days for the whole process.
3. Shanghai is a city in China, so you just need one entry permit.
4. Based on what I know, the copies of air tickets and hotel reservation are required, so you need to book the hotel and air tickets.
