About:Chinese Temporary Residence Permit

Study Mandarin and work in China. Which Visa shall I seek? L or Z?

I would like to study Mandarin for 4 weeks in the Summer at Peking University, after which I plan to stay and teach English for the school year. Should I travel with a tourist L type for the language course and then leave the country and enter with a Z type once I land a job? I would rather not travel back and forth. I am a US citizen. What is the best way?

Tim, you had better not take the course on an L type. Please ask for an invitation letter form the university to apply for an F or X2 type permit. Then, it will be easier to convert your paper to a work Z type without leaving China. I just say it's possible to do so at the local Exit and Entry Admisnitration but I can't guarantee that. Of course, if all goes well, this is the best way for you.
