About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Visa-free transit for Z100?

I am looking at the following itinerary:
- Day 1: Arrive in Beijing from US 17:00 (SFO-PEK)
- Day 4: Fly from Beijing to Hong Kong 20:00 (PEK-HKG)
- Day 6: Depart via train from Hong Kong to Shanghai 15:15 (Z100)
- Day 10: Depart from Shanghai for US 08:30 (SHA-PEK-SFO)
I've read your excellent "144-Hour Free Transit" page which suggests that a Shanghai arrival via train and departure via airport qualifies for free transit because of Shanghai's more flexible list of more eligible transit ports.
Have I read this correctly? My plan is to use the 72-hour free transit policy in Beijing, and the 144-hour free transit policy in Shanghai, since I am arriving and departing from outside countries/regions. However, I am not clear about two things:
- Will I be permitted to board the Z100 train in Kowloon without an entry permit?
- Will I have problems on the train without an entry permit, since it stops in several cities before arriving in Shanghai?

You can use the 72 hour free transit in Beijing, but you cannot enjoy the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai because when you fly back to US after transiting in Shanghai, you will also transit in Beijing. You should apply for a transit G type or tourist L type beforehand for your transit in Shanghai. Otherwise, you won’t be permitted to board the Z100 in Kowloon without an entry permit.

Thank you, Cindy; I overlooked the part about a direct transit in Beijing.

However, the main part of my question remains: is transit from Hong Kong to the U.S. via Shanghai allowed or complicated if the first leg (Kowloon to Shanghai) is via train, and the second leg (Shanghai to the U.S.) is via plane?

I am most interested in the following:
- whether I can board the Z100 train in Kowloon without an entry permit
- whether the fact that the Z100 stops in several cities before arriving in Shanghai is a problem for a passenger without an entry permit

My modified itinerary would look like this:
- Day 1: Arrive in Beijing from US (SFO-PEK)
- Day 4: Fly from Beijing to Hong Kong (PEK-HKG)
- Day 6: Depart via train from Hong Kong to Shanghai 15:15 (Z100)
- Day 10: Depart from Shanghai for US 08:30 (SHA-SFO)

Hi there! If you travel to Shanghai from HK by Train and fly to US from Shanghai by plane, it can work. As long as you stay in Shanghai for less than 144 hours, you can use the free transit there.

Your modified itinerary makes you qualify for the 72 hour free transit in Beijing and 144 hour free transit in Shanghai. In this case, you can board the Z100 train in HK without an entry permit. Or you can print out the 144 hour policy and take it with you in case that you are required to provide any proof.
As long as you don’t detrain along the way, even though you don’t have the entry permit, it’s fine. There will be no any problem.
